Minato-Ku / Aoyama – Nezu – museum
A monument to Japanese aesthetics, the Nezu is a family museum. The collection, over 7000 pieces of Japanese and East Asian artworks, paintings, ceramics, textiles, with a strong focus on Buddhist art, was started by Nezu Kaichiro, (1860-1940) a Japanese industrialist with a passion for art. On his death, his son Kaichiro Jr. established the Foundation and opened the museum in 1941. Rebuilt after the war in its present location, once the site of the Nezu family residence, the museum and huge gardens were redesigned by Kengo Kuma at the instigation of Kaichiro Jr.’s son, Nezu Kōichi in 2006.
My favorite corner, the traditional Japanese garden in front of the museum.
