Shimogyo-ku / Kawaramachi – Kaikado – coffee
Kaikado has been a family business since 1875. The family art, passed down from generation to generation, is the traditional technique for handcrafting ‘chazutsu’ tea containers, metal jars with an airtight seal.
With time and use, the jars become even more beautiful with the natural patina that forms over time. Even today, the company still repairs dented or misshapen ‘chazutsu’. The first Kaikado Café was opened in Kyoto, commissioned by the Yagi family from local architect Hideki Ohiwa and Danish designer Thomas Lykke’s OeO studio. The brief was to transform an old tram depot into a city café.
On the ground floor there is the coffee room, next to it a small garden, and on the upper floor an exhibition space for temporary exhibitions. A quiet refuge from the city.
