Zhu Jinshi – detached from colour
Lives and works in Beijing
I met artist Zhu Jinshi at the PearlLam Galleries in Hong Kong in 2017. A wide personal exhibition, I still remember the “perfume” of oil painting, his almost sculptural canvases, important layers of dense color alternating with naked space on the canvas. This is known as “Liu bai”, which means leaving a blank, a key element of Taoist traditional Chinese ink painting. In this unusual exhibition of great impact, canvases were all white or black and white.
