Shiga – Sagawa Art Museum

The main section of the museum, and the most important, contains a wide range of ceramic artworks, most of which were created in the year 2000 by the master of Raku ceramics, Kichizaemon XV – Jikinyū, a 15th generation ceramist, a repository of ancient techniques.
The extraordinary uniqueness of the place lies in the fact that the exhibition spaces have been entirely conceived and designed by the artist himself, with careful attention to the effects of light and material elements. The extraordinarily beautiful exhibition rooms are built underground, and therefore also under the water that surrounds the museum.  Here and there, glimpses of natural light appear; reflections made liquid by the movement of the water outside the exhibition rooms.
The semi-dark rooms are dotted with individually lit works that come to life in the surrounding darkness. The darkness aids concentration and attentive observation, so as to induce an almost meditative state, oblivious of the people around.
Inside there are two tea rooms built according to the Shuhari concept. While the extraordinary rooms maintain the tradition, they surprise the soul with the “new”

Shu Ha Ri – the three phases of cultural transmission on the way to mastery: “teaching imitation”, “experimentation”, “separation freedom”
